Cardiac Screening

Heart disease is the leading cause of premature death and illness in Irish men so taking care of you has never been more important. You may have a cardiac abnormality and not have any symptoms, or there may be one or two things happening to your body that are of concern to you.

We screen for hidden concerns and potentially preventable issues. Successful outcomes often come from early detection and management.

What is involved in screening?

  • We will take a family history
  • Full physical examination
  • Weight, Height & BMI
  • Fasting Blood investigations including cholesterol check
  • Blood Pressure check
  • ECG – This is a very simple, non invasive test which will examine the electrical activity within your heart

Heartwatch Clinics
Cahernane Medical is part of a national screening programme organised by the HSE and the ICGP. It is organised by the practice nurse and is specifically dedicated to patients who have had either a heart attack, by-pass surgery or an angioplasty.

The nurse invites registered patients to attend four times per year to monitor their blood pressure, weight and lifestyle. At your appointment the nurse will take blood tests for cholesterol, blood sugar, kidney and liver function. She will then ensure appropriate referrals to other clinics if necessary. All data is submitted by computer to a national database where information is collected to effectiveness of this community screening programme.
